Description

The monument comprises a pre-Improvement fermtoun, visible as upstanding buildings. A fermtoun is an agricultural settlement consisting of several farmsteads grouped together, dating from the period before the agricultural Improvements of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The monument lies at around 145m OD on a sloping hillside overlooking Loch Ryan. The footings of at least thirteen stone-built buildings can be traced extending along a broad terrace for a distance of some 190m. They form four distinct clusters, one of which also has a kiln. Around the settlement there are extensive traces of rig-and-furrow cultivation showing at least two distinct phases of cultivation.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is irregular with maximum dimensions of about 360m due N-S by 200m E-W, bounded on the S and E sides by walls which are themselves excluded from scheduling, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract. The above-ground elements of field boundaries within the scheduled area are also excluded from the scheduling.
