Description

The monument comprises a cairn of prehistoric date, visible as a stony mound and a standing stone, almost certainly contemporary.

The monument lies in rough pasture at around 180m OD, just to the NE of a relatively recent drystone wall. The cairn is circular and measures about 7m in diameter by a maximum of about 0.4m in height. Cairns of this type usually prove to be burial monuments dating to the Bronze Age, and may be expected to contain at least one burial as well as material relating to their mode of construction and use. The standing stone, located c. 55m to the NNW, measures about 0.9m N-S by 0.5m at the base, and stands about 1.4m high. It has been incorporated into a section of recent drystone dyke.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is rectangular, measuring a maximum of 90m NNW-SSE by a maximum of 30m transversely, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract. The above-ground elements of the drystone dyke attached to the standing stone are excluded from the scheduling to allow for unobstructed maintenance.
