The monument is a fort of the Iron Age occupying a coastal promontory to the N of Portpatrick. It measures 26m NE-SW by 23m transversely within defences consisting of a ditch with internal and external banks. The ditch is 5m wide and 1.3m deep; the inner bank survives to a height of 0.3m. The outer bank survives to 3.5m wide and 0.6m high. To the NE the private road leading to the RAE mast has damaged the outer defences. The area to be scheduled measures a maximum of 45m NE-SW by 40m transversely, bounded by the road to the NE, as marked in red on the attached map.

The monument is of national importance because it is a well-preserved example of a fort of the Iron Age which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric settlement in the area.
