The monument is a medieval motte situated on a promontory at Dunaldboys. Fashioned from a natural mound, it has been defended by at least one broad, deep ditch. The interior is on two levels, an upper peaked summit, and a lower terrace defended by a low bank. The ditch, 7.5m wide and 1.5m deep, is crossed by an entrance causeway giving access to a bridging point across a possible second, inner ditch. The area to be scheduled includes the motte and an area around it within which traces of activity associated with its use may be found. It respects the shape of the monument and measures amaximum of 80m NNW-SSE by a maximum of 70m transversely, as marked in red on the attached map.

The monument is of national importance as a medieval motte which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of medieval settlement in the area. It is of particular importance because of the survival in the Rhins of a number of other mottes; the study of this group has the potential to increase greatly our knowledge of the organisation of the medieval landscape.
