Description

The monument consists of two hut circles, field clearance cairns,and field banks of the Bronze Age or Iron Age situated on the SW flank of Cairnmon Fell. The N hut circle, cut into the slope to the E, measures 7.5m in diameter within a wall 1.5m thick and 0.3m high. The entrance to the SW opens onto an enclosure measuring 26m by 18m. The S hut circle, 200m to the SW, measures 9m in diameter within awall 1.7m thick and up to 0.5m high.

The entrance is to the E. Between the hut circles are at least nine field clearance cairns,and to the E are traces of field boundary banks. The area to be scheduled includes the hut circles, part of the field system, and an area around them within which traces of activity associated with their use may be found. It measures 300m NNE-SSW by 150m transversely, as marked in red on the attached map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as hut circles and field system of the Bronze Age or Iron Age which have the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric settlement in the area. It is of particular importance because it is of only a few such monuments in the W Rhins.
