Description

The monument is a pre-improvement farmstead situated in rough pasture beside the public road running N from Portpatrick. It comprises three rectangular buildings. The first, containing two compartments, measures 4.7m by 2.8m within walls 0.7m thick and 0.4m high. This is attached by a length of walling to another building measuring 5.2m by 4m within walls 1.1m thick and 0.4m high.

A third building measuring 9.4m by 4.7m overall lies to the E. The area to be scheduled includes the buildings and an area around them within which traces of activity associated with their use may be found. It measures a maximum of 70m NE-SW by 70m transversely, bounded by, but excluding, the modern field dykes on the NW and NE sides, as markedin red on the attached map.

The monument is of national importance as a pre-improvement farmstead which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of medieval and later settlement and agriculture in the area.
