Description

The monument consists of a burnt mound situated on a slight terrace on a steep W-facing slope to the NW of Starling Knowe. Crescentic on plan, the mound measures 7.5m in diameter and is up to 0.7m high. Its hollow opens W onto the head of a former, un-named stream. The mound has scarcely any vegetation on it and its make-up of fire-cracked stones is therefore unusually obvious. The area to be scheduled is circular on plan and measures 50m in diameter, to include the burnt mound and an area around in which associated remains may survive, as indicated in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because it is a well-preserved example of a burnt mound (or prehistoric cooking place) which extends the distribution of these monuments, which are well-recognised in Dumfries and Galloway, into southern Strathclyde. It has the potential to provide information about the date and function of such monuments as well as the nature and structure of Bronze Age society in the area, about which very little is known.
