This photo was taken in Mid March 2013 whilst stood at Grid Reference NZ 73984 10755 and looking in an Easterly direction.It is not particularly easy to pick out the pits because of the snow. Even without the snow it is difficult to get an overall view of the pits with a camera at ground level.If one can't actually visit to look at them in person I think they are best viewed in Google Earth.As to what they were for as far as I can make out nobody has a clue. there are plenty of theories but nobody really knows.
