Description

The monument comprises an enclosure of prehistoric date, visible as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 135m OD and occupies a good position on the crest of a slight rise, about 220m ENE of Ballingall Farm. It comprises a rectilinear enclosure with rounded corners, which is defined by double ditches. The enclosed area measures approximately 50m by 40m, while the ditches are between 1m and 2m wide. The enclosure will almost certainly contain the remains of a prehistoric farming settlement, perhaps dating from the Iron Age (some time between c.500 BC to AD 500).

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to survive. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with maximum measurements of 67m NW-SE by 69m NE-SW, as marked in red on the accompanying map. It is bounded on the SW and S by modern fences, which are excluded from the scheduling to allow for their maintenance.
