Description

The monument consists of the cropmark remains of a circular enclosure on the summit of Balig HIll, 450m WNW of Craigview farmhouse. The enclosure measures about 35m in diameter within two narrow ditches about 4m apart. Only the NW part of the enclosure can be seen clearly, on aerial photographs taken in 1977; the S half of the enclosure, although not visible, is also likely to be present.

The monument is not visible on the ground, which is now improved pasture and which has not been ploughed for the last five years. Experience has shown that such sites, although presenting no surface relief, may contain important archaeological evidence. The area to be scheduled is circular on plan and measures 105m in diameter, to include the enclosure and an area around in which associated remains may survive, as marked in red on the attached map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because the cropmarks represent the remains of a form of monument, presumably a prehistoric settlement site, the upstanding equivalents of which do not survive in this area of Scotland. The monument therefore has the potential to provide information about the structure and development of little understood aspects of prehistoric society.
