Description

The monument is a burial cairn of the neolithic or Bronze Agesituated on the summit of Cairn Fell. It measures about 16m indiameter and several kerb stones are visible on the SE side. It hasbeen robbed but this has only affected the cairn matrix, not theimportant base of the site. The area to be scheduled includes thecairn and an area around it within which traces of activityassociated with its use may be found. It measures 30m in diameter,centred on the monument, as marked in red on the attached map.

The monument is of national importance as a burial cairn of the Neolithic or Bronze Age which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric funerary and ritual practices.
