Description

The monument comprises the remains of a crannog, an artificial island. Scientific dating has shown it originated in the early Neolithic (3510-3200 BC). It likely continued in use into the Bronze Age (2500BC-500BC). It survives as a partially submerged timber and stone built island. The elements visible above the water level are broadly oval in plan, measuring about 14m in diameter, with a modern cairn in the centre. The monument lies within Loch Marabhat, at about 50m above sea level. A submerged causeway, measuring about 70m in length, extends from the southeast of the island, connecting it to the shore. The crannog is annotated as a cairn on Ordnance Survey mapping.

The scheduled area is irregular. It includes the remains described above and an area around within which evidence relating to the monument's construction, use and abandonment is expected to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The national importance of the monument is demonstrated in the following way(s) (see Designations Policy and Selection Guidance, Annex 1, para 17): a.  The monument is of national importance because it makes a significant contribution to our understanding or appreciation of the past, or has the potential to do so as a crannog dating to the early Neolithic and Bronze Age. It adds to our understanding of Neolithic and Bronze Age monumentality and communal practice, and the long-term significance of place.b.   The monument retains structural, architectural, decorative or other physical attributes which make a significant contribution to our understanding or appreciation of the past. In particular, there is significant potential for the survival of buried archaeological deposits, including waterlogged remains. Study of the form and construction techniques of the monument has the potential to increase our understanding of this monument and similar monuments elsewhere.c.   The monument is a rare example of a crannog constructed and used in the early Neolithic and Bronze Age. It is currently only one of only 11 known examples of this date in Scotland.d.   The monument is a particularly good example of a Neolithic and Bronze Age crannog and is therefore an important representative of this monument type.e.   The monument has research potential which could significantly contribute to our understanding or appreciation of the past. It is of significant archaeological interest. It can help us understand Neolithic and Bronze Age communal practices and belief, the role of lochs and other water bodies in the beliefs and values of prehistoric communities, as well as long term importance of place.f.   The monument makes a significant contribution to today's landscape and our understanding of the historic landscape. It formed an important part of the prehistoric landscape. It remains a significant feature in the landscape today.

Assessment of Cultural Significance

This statement of national importance has been informed by the following assessment of cultural significance:

Intrinsic characteristics (how the remains of a site or place contribute to our knowledge of the past)

The monument survives as a stone-built island with submerged stone and timber elements. Diver survey has confirmed that the lowest layers of this crannog are formed of timber. Samples from this timber layer returned dates of 3510-3200BC, indicating construction in the early Neolithic. Excavations at the nearby crannog in Loch Bhorghastail (SM13819; NRHE ID 359072) showed that this site originated as a timber-built platform in the early Neolithic. More timber and then stone was added during the Middle Bronze Age to create the site visible today. It is likely that the crannog at Loch Marabhat followed a similar sequence of development.

The function of the crannog is uncertain and no evidence for settlement has been found at excavated and similarly dated sites. However, considerable effort and resources would have been required to build and maintain the site. Large quantities of pottery, some with surviving food residue, and worked stone have been found on and around the monument. Together this suggests it may have been used for communal activities, such as cooking or feasting.

There is good potential for the survival of archaeological deposits, including waterlogged deposits, artefacts and environmental remains relating to all phases of the construction and use of this site. The archaeological deposits have the potential to provide information about the function and development of the monument over time as well as more precise dating. Study of the monument can tell us about communal practices and belief in prehistory as well as contemporary economy, land-use and environment. Study of the form and construction techniques of monument, compared with crannogs elsewhere, would enhance our understanding of the development sequence of this site and of prehistoric crannogs in general.

Contextual characteristics (how a site or place relates to its surroundings and/or to our existing knowledge of the past)

Crannogs of Neolithic and Bronze Age date are uncommon with only 11 confirmed examples, all in the Western Isles. Confirmed examples include Loch Langabhat (NRHE ID 270908), Loch an Duin (SM3264; NRHE ID 4092) and Loch Bhorghastail (SM13819; NRHE ID 359072), all on the Isle of Lewis. All appear to have originated in the early Neolithic and substantial quantities of prehistoric pottery and worked stone have been recovered from the loch beds around many of these sites. There is potential to study these sites together to better understand their functions within local communities and possible chronological development in the area.

As an artificial island, the monument occupies a prominent position in the landscape and would have been an important component of the wider prehistoric landscape of settlement, agriculture and ritual. Its position within a loch and evidence for communal activities such as feasting suggests that such watery locations may have held particular significance for prehistoric communities.

The monument therefore has the potential to enhance our understanding of community, society and belief during prehistory. Study of the monument in relation to similarly dated crannog sites can enhance our understanding of Neolithic and Bronze Age monumentality, belief and communal activities such as feasting. It has the potential to enhance our understanding of the long-term use and re-use of place and the role of water and lochs in the beliefs and values of communities in prehistory.
