The monument consists of a prehistoric hillfort situated on a spur overlooking the coast S of Fell of Carleton.
The fort is oval on plan. It is defended by two ramparts with an intervening ditch, and the internal area measures 76m NE-SW by 57m. The ramparts are in places reduced to little more than terraces. At the E side, where the defences survive best, the ditch is 6m wide and 1.6m deep. Around the crest of the hillock is a scarp suggesting the former presence of an inner wall. There is an entrance on the W, and the interior is crossed from N-S by an old field bank.
The area to be scheduled is an irregular oval, measuring a maximum of 120m ENE-WSW by 100m NW-SE, to include the fort, its outer defences and a small area around it in which evidence relating to its construction and use may survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map.
