Description

The monument is a motte, an earthen mound on which stood a wooden

castle constructed in the early years of the 12th century AD.

The monument consists of a grass-covered mound measuring 22m in

diameter at the base, 3m in height and 12m in diameter across its

flat top. The ditch which once surrounded the motte has been filled

up by cultivation on all sides except the SW, where it has been badly damaged, if not destroyed, by a road.

The area to be scheduled is defined on site by a metal fence, and measures 21m NW-SE by 19m, as marked in red on the accompanying map.
