Description

The monument comprises an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date, visible as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 40m OD. It consists of the W half of a sub-circular enclosure with a diameter of approximately 30m. The enclosure is defined by a single ditch which measures about 1m in width. This narrow ditch would have held a timber palisade, enclosing a settlement of at least one substantial timber roundhouse and its associated outbuildings.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to survive. It is semi-circular with a diameter of 60m, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to an understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is increased by its proximity to other monuments of potentially contemporary date.
