Description

The monument comprises the remains of a palisaded settlement of prehistoric date, visible as cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 20m OD. There is a roughly circular ditched enclosure measuring about 25m in internal diameter, with the ditch about 1m wide. There appears to be an entrance on the NE.

A palisade is a timber fence of closely spaced posts set into a continuous narrow trench. Enclosed settlements such as this are characteristic of the first half of the first millennium BC.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 50m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
