The monument is of national importance because of the extensive area of old ground surface buried below the cairns, and the potential for recovery of environmental evidence that this offers. It is also of national importance as a very fine field example of a cairnfield, and may contain important evidence of ritual practices in the form of human inhumation or cremation burials.
