The monument is of national importance as a prehistoric ceremonial structure, erected on what may be an artificial burial mound, which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. It is particularly important because of the discovery, in the vicinity, of early Bronze Age burials.
