Description

The monument is a cairn of the late neolithic or Bronze Age situated 40m N of the lighthouse at the Mull of Galloway. It measures 16.5m N- S by 15m transversely and is a maximum of 2.2m high. The monument is surmounted by a flagstaff set in concrete. Two large fuel tanks, one of which impinges on the cairn, lie to the E. The area to be scheduled, including the cairn and an area around it in which traces of activity associated with its use may be found, measures 30m in diameter. It is centred on the monument, as marked in red on the attached map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because it is a well-preserved example of a burial cairn of the late Neolithic or Bronze Age which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric funerary and ritual practices.
