Description

This monument consists of a post medieval settlement by the side of the Dunbeath Water. The foundations of 2 buildings are visible. One is a long house about 30m by 4.5m in size and is subdivided into 3 rooms. The building has a small annex on its long N wall. The turf and reed covered foundations survive to about 0.3m in height. The smaller building is about 7m by 4m and is defined by foundations

which are in a similar state of preservation. The area to be scheduled measures 200m E-W by 60m N-S, to include the buildings and an area around in which traces of activities associated with the occupation of the settlement will survive, as shown in red on the attached map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance for its potential to contribute to an understanding of post medieval settlement and the process of the Clearances in this area of Highland Scotland. This settlement represents a single isolated farm and contrasts with some of the larger clustered settlements in the lower area of Dunbeath Water.
