Description

The monument is a pre-improvement farmstead consisting of an enclosure 39.5m x 27m within a bank 2.6m thick accompanied on the NW, NE and SE by an external ditch 2.9m broad, containing the remains of two rectangular platform buildings. It is particular interest because its bank and tich are of different character from those of the Iron Age enclosures of the area, and are unique among the pre-improvement settlements of Eskdale.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of particularl national importance because of the bank and ditch which has excellent field characteristics. They are of completely different character to those of Iron Age sites in the area and are unique amongst the pre-improvement settlements of the area. The monument is nationally important to the theme of medieval rural settlement and economy.
