The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.
The monument lies in arable farmland at around 75m OD. It is sub-rectangular with three fairly well defined, sinuous sides, with an entrance in the E corner. The SW side is somewhat obscured by a diffuse cropmark of likely natural origin. The enclosure measures approximately 90m NW-SE by 50m NE-SW with a ditch some 3-4m wide. The irregularity of the sides make this an extremely unusual enclosure with few close parallels in the Lothians.
The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them which in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is circular with a diameter of 140m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is greatly enhanced by its association with wider landscape of prehistoric settlement centred around Traprain Law.
