Thornton Le Dale Cross & Stocks

Uploader's Comments

The cross is located on the village green at the centre of the village next to the village stocks. In this view the stocks are in front of the cross as we look east along the Scarborough Road.It is a Market Cross medieval in origin, the weekly market whose charter was granted in 1281 no longer operates. The stocks were last used for public punishment as recently as 1874. This photo was taken late January 2012
