Prehistoric Standing Stone

Uploader's Comments

Marked on the OS map at NZ 70789 06582 as a Standing Stone and enclosure this is a prehistoric standing stone set within what looks like the remains of a ring cairn. It was once thought to be the remains of a stone circle however excavations in 1986 - 1989
do not support this theory. However Frank Elgee in his 1930 book ( Early Man in N.E. Yorkshire) quotes Canon Atkinson vicar of Danby from 1847 to 1900 as stating the Standing Stone was the last of of four which stood round the inner side of a circular bank of earth and stones 6ft wide, 4ft high and enclosing a space of 42ft in diameter. Sounds like a circle to me and how did Canon Atkinson know this? did he see it? Anyway this view looking towards Lealholm taken in early February 2013
