A Scheduled Monument in Danby, North Yorkshire

Overview Danby / Ainthorpe Rigg

Uploader's Comments

Overview of Danby / Ainthorpe Rigg taken from the northern slope of Pind Howe looking towards Danby, the photo was taken in early February 2013 .This is the predominantly Bronze Age landscape as described in the English Heritage Notes. The Double Dyke runs across the rigg just above the centre of the photo, the northern, eastern and western slopes are fairly steep so it would have been a good defensive position.
Frank Elgee in his 1930 book “Early man in North East Yorkshire” reckons at one time there were some 800! small round barrows made of stones, 10 to 18ft across and less than 2ft in height within the landscape shown in the above photo.
