Alum quarries and works 800m north of Sandsend Bridge

A Scheduled Monument in Lythe, North Yorkshire

Deep Grove Railway Tunnel

Uploader's Comments

The tunnel entrance in the photo was the east portal of what was known as the Sandsend or Deep Grove tunnel for the coastal railway line which ran from Middlesbrough to Whitby. The line was completed in 1883 and closed in 1958. After the train exited the tunnel it then ran through the Alum Quarries at Deep Grove which by then were no longer used for Alum quarrying. However Cement Stone was mined at Deep Grove from 1811 to 1933 and overlapped the last fifty years of Alum production. The photo was taken in the third week of July 2013
