Whitby Abbey Cross

Uploader's Comments

Located outside the Abbey gates near the car park. It is sometimes referred to as the Old Market Cross even though it is built on the site of what was the cemetery of the medieval Abbey. This is not as incongruous as it seems as markets were not unknown to be held in medieval churchyards. Now ravaged by time, the cross-piece has long since disintegrated with only a small stump of stone left at the top. The photo was taken in July 2011
