Percy Cross bowl barrow

A Scheduled Monument in Great Ayton, North Yorkshire

Starfish Decoy Site Control Bunker at NZ 60177 12430

Uploader's Comments

During WWII this area in the immediate vicinity and to the east of the round barrow was designated as what was known as a Starfish Decoy Site. The Decoy Site consisted of basket fires which were ignited electrically from a Control Bunker about half a mile to the NW of the round barrow. The idea was to lure the German bombers during WWII into attacking this area rather than Industrial Teesside . This view of the bunker is looking northerly and was taken in August 2013
