The original Cross on this site was made of wood and dated from 1200. The present cross is 18th century and has been repaired several times. The last couple of times in 1984 and 1990 when a vehicle used a tow rope to pull it down. This cross was adopted in 1974 as the emblem of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park
