Description

The monument consists of a late-prehistoric fortified settlement, or dun, on a small island in Loch an Duin.

The dun stands up to 1.5m high, in a tumble of stones and bracken. It is almost circular on plan, with an outer diameter of 9.3m, and at winter water-levels rises from the water's edge. The interior is obscured, and traces of radial walling reported in 1928 are no longer visible. There is a causeway, from the shore to the NE, which is

almost completely submerged.

The area to be scheduled consists of a circle 30m in diameter to include the dun, the whole of the islet on which it stands and a portion of the loch-bed around it, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a small circular dun with a high possibility of well-preserved structural evidence and occupation deposits, which through excavation and analysis could provide important information about the domestic economy and domestic and defensive architecture of the later prehistoric period in Atlantic Scotland.
