Description

The monument comprises the remains of a prehistoric chambered burial cairn.

The cairn is situated on the E shoulder of a low hill called Hoddans, at about 50m above sea level. The majority of the small stones making up the body of the cairn have been removed, but most of the larger blocks marking its outer kerb and inner chamber are still in place. The diameter has been about 6.8m overall, with the entrance facing to the SSE. The plan of the cairn appears to have been of the typical Shetland "heel-shaped" form, with a concave facade on the SE side.

The area to be scheduled is circular and 15m in diameter, centred on the cairn, as marked in red on the accompanying map. This just excludes the foot of a modern electricity pole.
