The area to be scheduled is circular, 20m in diameter, to include the mound and an area around, stretching as far as the stream, in which evidence relating to its accumulation and use may survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance as fine example of a small burnt mound, in a typical location by fresh water. It is one of a large group of late Neolithic and early Bronze Age monuments in the area, which taken together, form one of the greatest concentrations of prehistoric remains in Scotland, and therefore have an exceptional value in studying the evolving pattern of human settlement.
