Description

The monument comprises an elongated prehistoric chambered burial cairn of composite construction. It is already scheduled, but with an inadequate area to protect all of the archaeology. This re-scheduling extends the protected area accordingly.

The monument is a sub-circular cairn, measuring about 17m across, and standing to a height of 2m. Its centre has partly collapsed, revealing 2 large lintel stones. There are traces of a possible stone structure immediately around the cairn, especially on the E side. Extending about 80m to the NNW of the chambered cairn is a low irregular mound which is much less substantial. The clearest portion is a 25m stretch about 50m from the chambered cairn. Although sometimes regarded as two separate cairns, it is more likely the two cairns were at one time part of a single, multi-phase construction.

The area now to be scheduled is an elongated shape, with parallel sides and rounded ends. It measures a maximum of 130m NNW-SSE by 40m, to include the chambered cairn and its long, low, NNW extension, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
