Description

The monument comprises a souterrain of prehistoric date. The importance of the site is reflected in its status as a Property in Care of the Secretary of State. It is being rescheduled to clarify the extent of the scheduled area.

The monument lies in an area of arable farmland, although the central part of the site is set within a fenced enclosure maintained by Historic Scotland. The main visible feature of the site is a complex souterrain; a type of semi-subterranean, passage-like structure, thought to have been used for storage in the later prehistoric period.

Excavations in 1950 showed that the souterrain was associated with several above-ground structures. More such structures may be expected to survive in the unexcavated areas in the immediate vicinity of the souterrain, both inside and outside the fenced enclosure.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 70m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
