Description

The monument is a prehistoric cairn situated at about 10m O.D. on the NW tip of Sron na h-Aire, a rocky promontory, 150m NNE of Dun Ara Fort.

The monument consists of a grass-covered mound, measuring c. 6.5m in diameter and a maximum of 1.2m in height. A cist in the centre of the burial cairn is exposed, most probably due to stone-robbing or treasure hunting in the past. The monument dates to the Bronze Age and forms part of the ritual landscape relating to the funerary practices of the first half of the second millennium B. C..

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the mound and an area around it within which related archaeological material may be found. It is circular on plan, with a diameter of 15m, centred on the monument, and is marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as an example of a prehistoric burial monument. Although a cist has been exposed the mound will probably cover or incorporate other burials. It is particularly important as it is one of a number of similar monuments in this locality that allows for comparative study.
