Description

The monument comprises a hut circle of prehistoric date, visible as turf-covered wall footings, and two shielings of pre-Improvement date.

The monument lies in rough pasture at around 185m OD. It comprises a hut circle measuring about 8.8m in internal diameter. Its walls mostly survive as a stony bank about 1.8m thick by 0.3m in height, but, on the W, part of the inner face is visible and survives up to 0.4m in height with three courses of stonework. There is a probable entrance on the SE. Hut circles are characteristic of Bronze and Iron Age settlement sites and represent the remains of timber-roofed roundhouses.

About 60m to the SSW of the hut-circle, at the foot of a steep slope, are two shieling-huts, each measuring less than 5m in diameter and standing up to about 0.6m in height. Shielings are small buildings of pre-Improvement date which were used for habitation during the summer months when livestock and agriculture were moved into upland areas.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is rectangular with maximum dimensions of 100m N-S and 50m E-W, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
