Description

The monument comprises a crannog of prehistoric date, visible as a stony mound.

The monument lies towards the W side of Cults Loch. The crannog survives as a mound of stones rising above the level of the loch, measuring about 10m in diameter. Wooden beams and stakes were found along the shore of the loch in 1872 and 1986. Crannogs are timber roundhouses, built on wooden platforms or upon natural or artificial islands in lochs, often connected to the shore by causeways. Crannogs may have a variety of dates, from the Neolithic to the early Medieval period.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the crannog as described and an area of the loch bed around it within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 40m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
