Description

The monument comprises an enclosed settlement, probably of prehistoric date, visible as cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 30m OD. There is a circular palisade trench measuring about 55m in internal diameter with the trench about 1m wide. Concentric to this trench, and about 4m outside it, there is a circular ditch about 2m wide. There appear to be several entrances in the outer ditch. Cropmarks in the interior probably indicate the survival of internal domestic structures. A palisade is a timber fence of closely spaced posts set into a continuous narrow trench. Enclosed settlements such as this are characteristic of the first half of the first millennium BC.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is a truncated circle on plan with a diameter of 90m, bounded on the W by the edge of a plantation, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
