Description

The monument comprises the remains of Southwick Church situated within a burial ground.

The original church appears to have been dedicated to 'Our Lady of Southwick' in the 13th century. The existing fragment has been much altered, if not rebuilt, in the post- Reformation period. The remains are oblong on plan, measuring 19m by 8m and with walls standing to 3.6m in height. Traces of a cross-wall indicate that the interior was once divided almost equally into two parts. There are modern breaks at the W end of each lateral wall.

The area to be scheduled is a rectangle 30m NE-SW by 20m transversely to include the church, its interior and an area of ground extending 5m out from its outer walls on all sides as marked in red on the accompanying map extract. Any lairs for which burial rights exist are excluded from this scheduling.
