Description

The monument comprises the remains of a late 16th-century, L-plan tower house substantially altered and added to in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to form a mansion house. The building was dismantled and roofless by 1954.

The original Castle Wigg stands in the SE angle of the complex where the original doorway bears a heraldic stone dated 1593. The initials on the stone refer to Archibald Stewart of Bardye and Tonderghie who acquired the lands of Wigg in 1584 and for whom the castle was built. The original newel stair is believed to have stood in the angle of the building close to the entrance. Following alterations, access to the upper floors of the tower house was gained via a staircase in the modern addition.

The area to be scheduled is rectangular in shape with maximum dimensions of 50m NNE-SSW by 35m, to include the remains of the castle and mansion house and an area around them within which associated remains are expected to survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
