Description

The monument comprises a pillbox of Second World War date, one of a group of defensive structures associated with the former military airfield at Crail. The airfield is recognised as being one of the best preserved abandoned military airfield sites in Scotland, built in 1918 but with surviving structures and runways dating from the Second World War.

The pillbox, which lies adjacent to the coastal path on the north edge of Balcomie Golf Links some 1200m north of Crail Airfield, consists of a subterranean concrete cylinder approximately 2.5m in diameter topped by a steel dome, the latter showing signs of rust. Only the steel dome is visible above ground.

The scheduled area is circular, centred on the pillbox, and measures 5m in diameter to include the visible and subterranean remains and an area around them within which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance for its group value as part of the defences of the Crail Airfield complex. As such it is part of a complex which is probably the finest of its class in Scotland, and serves to illustrate in concrete form the intense effort which went into defensive construction during the earlier years of World War 2.
