The monument is a very substantial cairn on the summit of Tinto Hill. Although added to over the years, the cairn has its origin as a prehistoric burial place. The area to be scheduled is circular and 60m in diameter, as delineated in red on the attached plan.

The monument is of national importance as a fine field monument, being one of the most substantial cairns in Scotland. Also of national importance is the fact that more recent accretions undoubtedly contain a prehistoric burial cairn, with evidence for funerary practices in the Neolithic or Bronze Age.
