The monument comprises the remains of a medieval motte, the site of a timber castle likely to date from the 12th or 13th centuries AD. The motte is a partly natural mound located beside the Pow Burn, measuring 35m in diameter overall and stands up to 8.5m high. The top of the motte is approximately level and that area measures around 14m by 16m. The remains of a mill-pond and stone wall associated with Helenton Mill survive between the motte and the burn. The monument is bounded by a modern road and a burn with a modern house immediately to its south. It is at a height of around 75m above sea level.
The scheduled area is irregular and includes the remains described above and an area around within which evidence relating to the monument's construction, use and abandonment is expected to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map. The southern boundary of the scheduled area runs parallel with the northernmost wall of a modern house and is located one metre from this wall. The scheduling excludes the above-ground elements of the garden shed and base and all fences, gates, modern (brick) walls and pylons/telegraph poles. The top 20cm of the gravelled and tarmac driveway is also excluded.
