Description

The monument consists of the remains of a house of 16th to 17th-century date.

It is situated in a field just N of the Water of Girvan. The site consists of a slightly raised rectangular platform measuring 29m N-S by 32.5m E-W overall. This may be the foundation of an outer courtyard. The external courtyard drain runs along the N and W sides and is 4m wide and 0.8m deep. It meets a modern ditch running S in the wood to the E. The only upstanding remains consist of a portion of masonry situated in the SW portion of the platform. This fragment is of random rubble and lime mortar. It is 9.7m long, 0.8m thick and 3m high. There was a window in the wall but only one dressed stone remains "in situ". The footings of this wall extend E for a distance of 8m and W for a distance of 1m. To the N of the masonry wall are

more debris-covered footings that define a sub-rectangular area approximately 16m square.

The area to be scheduled is rectangular and measures a maximum of 60m N-S by 50m E-W, to be centred on the earthwork platform, as shown in red on the accompanying map.
