Description

The monument consists of two rock outcrops, each decorated by carving. The first, which is located just outside the wall enclosing the improved field on the summit of Eggerness Hill at its W corner, has an incised design showing three deer, together with two or more cupmarks. The second, 60m SSE of the first, bears a number of small spiral designs and several cupmarks. The area to be scheduled at each location is a circular one, 10m in diameter, centred on the rock outcrop in each case, all as delineated on the attached plan.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as an exceptionally fine example of the type of stone normally referred to as Pictish, but here occurring in the extreme SW of Scotland. An analogy might be drawn to the ?Pictish? carving on Trusty?s Hill, Gatehouse-of-Fleet. Also of importance is the occurrence in close proximity of what must on analogy be Dark Age symbols and what would in isolation be thought of as later Neolithic or Bronze Age symbols.
