The monument is an alignment of 5 stones, only one of which is now standing, running from SW to NE across moorland to the SE of the road between Lairhill and the Sheriffmuir Inn. The south-westernmost stone bears about 20 cupmarks on its exposed surface. The gaps between the stones vary from 70m to 135m. The area around and between the stones will contain traces of activities associated with their erection and use; burials may well have been placed around and between the stones.
The area to be scheduled measures 400m SW to NE by 20m transversely, to include the stones and an area around in which archaeologically detectable traces will survive, as marked in red on the attached map.

The monument is of national importance as a type of monument infrequently found in southern Scotland, which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric ceremonial and possibly burial practices. It is of particular importance as the alignment may have had a primitive astronomical use, possibly marking the position of a heavenly body.
