The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on aerial photographs.
The monument lies on sloping ground in arable farmland at around 135m OD. It comprises an enclosure some 70m square with rounded corners, within a ditch up to 8m broad. Such enclosures are thought to be characteristic of the period of Roman influence in southern and eastern Scotland.
The area to be scheduled encompasses the remains described above and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is sub-rectangular with maximum dimensions of 120m NNW-SSE by 120m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. It has an unusually rectilinear plan in comparison with other enclosures of similar size in the vicinity, and this may suggest a special significance or function.
