Description

The monument consists of a large group of hut circles in a forestry plantation.

The hut circles occur over an area of 30 to 40 hectares and most have been left as clearings in a forestry plantation. 21 hut circles are proposed for scheduling and 2 examples are excluded, having been damaged by forestry operations. The hut circles vary in scale, diameter and construction: the largest example is about 14m across and the smallest 6.5m. Some cairns and field banks survive in the forestry clearings and indicate traces of field systems contemporary with the settlement.

The 14 areas to be scheduled vary in size from a circle with a diameter of 30m up to an area with maximum dimensions of 70m E-W by 40m N-S; these areas include the hut circles, cairns, field banks and areas around these structures in which traces of activities associated with their construction and use may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to provide information on the structure of prehistoric houses and the domestic life of their occupants. These hut circles are well preserved and exhibit a wide variety of differing methods of construction.
