Description

The monument comprises the remains of a cairn of prehistoric date, visible as a grass-covered mound.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 230m OD. It comprises a cairn measuring approximately 16m in diameter and standing to a height of about 2.5m. Cairns of this type are burial monuments dating to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, and may be expected to contain at least one burial as well as material relating to their mode of construction and use.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 40m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to an understanding of prehistoric ritual and burial practices. It is of particular importance because of the survival in the area of other broadly contemporary burial cairns.
