Hollins Mine and Bank Top iron calcining kilns

A Scheduled Monument in Hartoft, North Yorkshire

Banktop Calcining Klins at SE 72077 94862

Uploader's Comments

The iron ore was hauled up an incline from the Hollins mine where it was calcined in these kilns at SE 72077 94862 before being transported by rail to the Blast Furnaces on Teesside. The Hollins mine operated from 1856 to 1885. However 2 miles to the north west of the Hollins mine was another mine known as Sherrifs Pit which operated from about 1857 to 1911 and though I can't find anything written down its logical to presume that the ore from this mine was also calcined in these kilns before being sent to Teesside.
